EV charging station installation St. Catharines ON

Congratulations, you’ve made the decision to purchase an electric or hybrid vehicle.  Whether your choice was determined by your environmental consciousness, your awareness of the reduced annual maintenance of EVs, or your prediction that EVs will be the car of the future so you might as well hop on board, you might need to look into making a minor accommodation to make the charging a whole lot easier.

Before we delve into the details, let’s look into the two types of charging typically available for hybrid or electric vehicles.

Charging stations can be found in a few public sites throughout North America, with the number of stations growing annually.  Some workplaces may also have them.  However, the most important station we as the consumer should consider is the home charging station.

There are many makes and models of EVs these days, with more car makes likely to jump on board.  You’ll likely recognize the Tesla brand name, but other car brands are paving the way for EVs and hybrids such as Kia, Ford, Hyundai and Chevy.  For many of the EV models, a cord system will come standard with the car, allowing you to plug into a typical 120 V wall socket.  This is called Level 1 charging.  This may be sufficient for a hybrid vehicle to charge fully overnight, but with an EV, you’ll likely run into efficiency problems.

This is where Level 2 charging comes in.  Similar to the setup of a clothes dryer or stove, you’re looking at a 240 V station.  This typically isn’t standard in most homes, so you’ll need to contact a licensed and experienced electrical contractor like Electrician St. Catharines to perform the proper EV charging station installation in your garage or carport.  With this upgrade, you can be confident your car will be fully powered up overnight.

If you’re on the fence about purchasing an electric vehicle, here is a basic pros and cons of owning an EV:

Pros:

  • Lower maintenance: no gas needed, fewer running parts mean no need to fuel up at gas stations, or going in for oil changes and fluid top-ups.  Fewer trips for maintenance saves you time and money.

  • Ride experience: since there’s no noisy engine, you’ll be looking at a much quieter and smoother ride.

  • Environmentally-conscious: no emissions, no exhaust system, no toxic fumes released mean EVs are the environmentally-conscious choice.

Cons:

  • Higher upfront cost: you save money throughout the lifespan of the EV, but it’s no secret the initial ticket price is higher, and we’re not even talking about Tesla - other car makers’s EV options are costlier than their gas car counterparts.

  • Recharging anxiety: if you’re into long roadtrips, you might be anxious that you won’t find any charging stations nearby.  Although they’re popping up in more and more places, you might be taking a long trip somewhere rural where you might not come across a charging station for a long while, in which case pre-planning your route is key.

If you’ve decided on an EV, it’s a no-brainer to upgrade your home EV charging station to a 240 V by a licensed electrician like Electrician St. Catharines.  Give us a call and we’ll set up an appointment right away.
